<p>Italy has some of the best Christmas markets. They are a great place to get a feel for the local traditions, sample the local delicacies, and see the work of local artisans.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-color" style="color:#eb5b2d">Ortisei Christmas Village</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full is-resized"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="1000" height="500" src="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Ortisei2.jpg" alt="Ortisei Christmas Market" class="wp-image-2791" style="width:850px" srcset="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Ortisei2.jpg 1000w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Ortisei2-300x150.jpg 300w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Ortisei2-768x384.jpg 768w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Ortisei2-480x240.jpg 480w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></figure>

<p>Like every year in December, <strong>Ortisei </strong>turns into the &#8220;<a href="https://www.christmasvalley.it/nadelurtijei/en">Christmas Village</a>&#8221; and is definitely on of the top Christmas Markets in Italy. In the wooden huts you can discover sculptures, candles and glass objects made by master craftsmen but also South Tyrolean spirits and wines. The Christmas Village combines the historical traditions of Val Gardena with the elegance and exclusivity of the range of products. The “Lodenlounges”, cosy and comfortable wooden huts, invite visitors to experience the market with all five senses, by tasting local products and gastronomic delicacies in a romantic atmosphere.</p>

<p>In the streets of the town, the exhibition of the nativity scenes displayed in the showcase booths is also worth visiting and, as every year, an additional human-sized wooden statue will be added to enrich the largest nativity scene in the world. Open until January 4, 2026.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-color" style="color:#eb5b2d"><strong>Merano Christmas Market</strong></h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full is-resized"><img decoding="async" width="750" height="500" src="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Merano.jpg" alt="Merano Christmas Market" class="wp-image-2793" style="width:850px" srcset="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Merano.jpg 750w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Merano-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Merano-360x240.jpg 360w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Merano-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /></figure>

<p><strong>Merano</strong> in South Tyrol is a town known as a place for relaxation and well-being. They carry this way of life into the holiday season by hosting a market that captures the magic of Christmas. Experience snow reaching the summit of the alpine peaks, community togetherness, and the smell of cinnamon and fresh pastries. The whole town is embellished for the season, and in the central square you can watch figure skating shows or hit the ice yourself. Afterwards, warm up with a cup of tea or mulled wine in the heated booths, while admiring the backdrop of snow-tipped mountains. The sparkling Christmas lights at night are enough to bring visitors, but they also do us a huge favor in selling locally made woolen and wooden goods, in addition to other local crafts. The <a href="https://www.merano-suedtirol.it/en/merano/info-service/events/merano-christmas-market.html">Merano Christmas Market</a> is open until January 6, 2026</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Venice-Christmas-Market-1024x683.jpg" alt="Venice Christmas Market" class="wp-image-2797" style="width:850px" srcset="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Venice-Christmas-Market-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Venice-Christmas-Market-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Venice-Christmas-Market-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Venice-Christmas-Market-360x240.jpg 360w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Venice-Christmas-Market-600x400.jpg 600w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Venice-Christmas-Market.jpg 1500w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>For the three weeks before&nbsp;Christmas&nbsp;&#8211; until December 24th &#8211;&nbsp;<strong>Campo Santo Stefano</strong>&nbsp;in <strong>Venice</strong> is transformed into a&nbsp;Christmas Village,&nbsp; entirely filled with craftsmen and food producers, whose displays are housed in 30 little wooden cabins. The square is lined with a backdrop picturing Venetian palaces, giving the whole scene a festival atmosphere.</p>

<p>The <a href="https://www.venice-tourism.com/en/venice-christmas-market">Venice Christmas Market</a> features Christmas ornaments and decorations of Murano glass, traditional carnival<strong> </strong>masks, ceramics, jewelry, marbled paper and other Venetian craft specialties. Murano glass is also used in jewelry, alone or worked into designs with silver and gold. Carnival masks can be as simple as the red, gold and black eye masks or elaborate creations from the studios of all the town.</p>

<p>One section of the Campo San Stefano market is devoted to Italian specialty foods – traditional cakes and sweets, fine olive oils, vintage balsamic vinegars and other locally made gourmet products fill the booths. Look for creamy white almond-studded nougat, fruit-filled Panettone from nearby Verona, bags of specialty Pastas, tiny Biscotti, dried Porcini Mushrooms, candied Chestnuts and delicacies made with precious white Truffles from Alba. Open until December 24, 2025.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-color" style="color:#eb5b2d">Rome Christmas Market</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="770" height="424" src="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Rome-Christmas-Piazza-Navona2.jpg" alt="Rome Christmas Market" class="wp-image-2799" style="width:850px" srcset="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Rome-Christmas-Piazza-Navona2.jpg 770w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Rome-Christmas-Piazza-Navona2-300x165.jpg 300w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Rome-Christmas-Piazza-Navona2-768x423.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 770px) 100vw, 770px" /></figure>

<p>The Eternal City’s most famous markets are in the <strong>Piazza Navona</strong>, built on the site of the Stadium of Domitian and now home to three spectacular fountains. During the season, the square transforms into a bustling, colorful shopping spot, selling nativity scenes and Christmas sweets, like biscuits and nougat. Wander around and watch the street artists and acrobats and of course, visit Santa Claus. But be sure to come back on January 6, when Befana hands out presents to good kids and coal to the not-so-good ones. Rome&#8217;s <a href="https://www.turismoroma.it/it/eventi/mercatino-di-natale-e-festa-della-befana-piazza-navona-1">Christmas Market</a> (the link on Rome&#8217;s website has not been updated yet) at Piazza Navona is open until January 6, 2026.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-color" style="color:#eb5b2d">Naples Nativity Scene</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="700" height="465" src="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Naples-Nativity.jpg" alt="Christmas Market Naples" class="wp-image-2801" style="width:847px" srcset="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Naples-Nativity.jpg 700w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Naples-Nativity-300x199.jpg 300w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Naples-Nativity-360x240.jpg 360w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Naples-Nativity-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /></figure>

<p>Known for its rich history, incredible architecture and mouth-watering Neapolitan cuisine, <strong>Naples</strong> city center is bustling with vibrant energy, creating a unique holiday experience. In December, the city becomes a festive hub at the <a href="https://www.italia.it/en/campania/things-to-do/nativity-sets-in-naples-and-campania">Naples Christmas Market</a>, where visitors can explore wooden stalls filled with artisanal crafts and traditional Italian holiday foods. Definitely one of the top Christmas Markets.</p>

<p>If you’re one of those people who think Christmas is over too quickly, Naples is the city for you! Famous for their nativity scenes, or <em>presepi</em>, they have a year-round Christmas “market”. Shops and entire streets offer the traditional figurines every month of the year. Starting around mid-November, the street Via San Gregorio truly enhances the holiday feels! Get lost among the many market stands and shops selling local treats. Stroll down the narrow alleyways and then check out the live nativity scene is Piazza S. Gaetano.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-color" style="color:#eb5b2d">Taormina Christmas Market</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="500" src="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Taormina.jpg" alt="Christmas Market Taormina" class="wp-image-2803" style="width:850px" srcset="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Taormina.jpg 750w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Taormina-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Taormina-360x240.jpg 360w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Taormina-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /></figure>

<p><strong>Taormina</strong>, though beautiful all year round, becomes even more magical in Christmas time, and it&#8217;s a great spot for those who prefer mild temperatures to snow. During December and through Epiphany, a folkloric atmosphere takes over the small, hilltop town with concerts, exhibitions, nativity scenes, and historical enactments. The stands are full of sweets, like Sicilian cakes, crafts, and everything you need to decorate for the season.</p>

<p>Trace your way through history while navigating the medieval streets in the ‘Presepe Vivente’ where the nativity scene comes to life throughout the city, incorporating the entire community. Enjoy the symbolic tradition of lighting the Christmas bonfire in front of Duomo di Taormina. While enjoying the breathtaking sea views and Mt. Etna from the city center and admiring the twinkling lights and decorations interwoven with the ancient buildings, Taormina is the embodiment of Christmas time. Open until January 6, 2026.</p>

It is also a nesting site for loggerhead sea turtles, offering visitors a chance to see these magnificent creatures. The beach is also known as <em>pùligi de nie</em> (snow fleas) because of its round, white and pink pebbles mixed with sand. <strong><a href="https://www.sardegnaturismo.it/en/explore/cala-mariolu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cala Mariolu</a></strong>, in the Baunei area, owes its name to the monk seal that stole the catch from the fishermen of Ponza, hence <em>mariolo </em>(thief).</p><p>Its panorama is so impressive due to its infinite shades of blue, emerald green and mid-blue, and the snowflake-like pebbles. The 1.650-feet (500 meter)-high cliff that surrounds it drops steeply both to the north and to the south. For this reason, Cala Mariolu can only be reached by land via a difficult path (for experts) through dense Mediterranean forest.</p><p>Watch out: There is no more sun on this stretch of beach from around 4 pm. It therefore makes sense to arrive a little earlier in the day. In addition to being one of the most beautiful beaches in Italy, the bay of Cala Mariolu in Sardinia is even considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe! It is therefore definitely worth a visit.</p><p><strong>Special Features:</strong></p><ul class="wp-block-list"><li><strong>Crystal-Clear Waters</strong>: The waters at Cala Mariolu are exceptionally clear with a distinctive emerald hue which adds to its exotic appeal. It&#8217;s a perfect spot for snorkeling and swimming. The underwater visibility allows visitors to see a variety of marine life and colorful fish.</li><li><strong>Unique Pebble Beach</strong>: Unlike typical sandy beaches, Cala Mariolu is composed of small, rounded white pebbles mixed with sand, giving it a unique texture and appearance, and making the water appear even more vibrant.</li><li><strong>Dramatic Limestone Cliffs and Caves</strong>: The beach is surrounded by impressive towering limestone cliffs that provide a dramatic backdrop. These cliffs also feature numerous sea caves that can be explored by boat or while snorkeling. It is a snorkeler’s paradise with rich marine biodiversity.</li></ul><figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="850" height="565" class="wp-image-3192" style="width: 850px;" src="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/mariolu_giu11_152_rsz_rsz-1024x681.jpg" alt="Best Beaches in Italy Cala Mariolu @Sardegna Turismo" srcset="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/mariolu_giu11_152_rsz_rsz-1024x681.jpg 1024w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/mariolu_giu11_152_rsz_rsz-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/mariolu_giu11_152_rsz_rsz-768x511.jpg 768w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/mariolu_giu11_152_rsz_rsz-360x240.jpg 360w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/mariolu_giu11_152_rsz_rsz-600x400.jpg 600w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/mariolu_giu11_152_rsz_rsz.jpg 1144w" sizes="(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px" /></figure><ul class="wp-block-list"><li><strong>Marine Life</strong>: The rich marine environment makes Cala Mariolu a popular spot for divers and snorkelers. Most visitors reach the beach by boat, which can be rented from nearby towns such as Cala Gonone or Santa Maria Navarrese.</li><li><strong>Scenic Hiking Trails</strong>: For those who prefer land-based adventures, there are challenging hiking trails leading to Cala Mariolu, offering stunning views of the coastline and the Mediterranean Sea.</li></ul><div class="wp-block-spacer" style="height: 50px;" aria-hidden="true"> </div><h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center">Tropea Beach, Calabria</h2><figure class="wp-block-image size-full is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone wp-image-3194" style="width: 850px;" src="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Tropea_Flickr_simo0082_web.jpg" alt="Best Beaches of Italy Tropea @Flickr_simo0082" width="1024" height="768" srcset="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Tropea_Flickr_simo0082_web.jpg 1024w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Tropea_Flickr_simo0082_web-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Tropea_Flickr_simo0082_web-768x576.jpg 768w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Tropea_Flickr_simo0082_web-80x60.jpg 80w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure><p>In the far south, at the end of the Italian boot in Calabria, lies the small town of <strong><a href="https://www.italia.it/en/calabria/things-to-do/tropea" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tropea</a></strong>. With its well-preserved old town and its famous cathedral, <em>Santa Maria dell&#8217;Isola</em>, the town of 6,500 inhabitants is one of the most popular destinations for tourists, not only from Europe. It is not without reason that the town is also known as the &#8220;Pearl of Calabria&#8221;.</p><p>The special thing about Tropea: a picturesque sandy beach with azure blue water lies directly below the old town. And that&#8217;s not all. If you want a particularly quiet place, you can simply drive a little further along the coast. There are many more small bays to discover, which are a little more secluded. <h3 class="wp-block-heading">New look for the former Hotel Roma in Ortigia, Sicily</h3>

<p>The <strong>Hotel Roma</strong> in Ortigia (Syracuse) changed its name and received a new look. The hotel, designed by VRetreats, is now <strong>Palazzo Artemide</strong>.</p>

<p>A non-random choice, which refers to the name of the Greek goddess protector of the city of Syracuse to whom the same Temple, the <em>Artemision</em>, is also dedicated. The remains of which can still be admired today along Via Minerva, at the highest point of the Island of Ortigia is a short walk from the hotel.</p>

<p>Added to this was also the new naming of the restaurant and bar inside: <em>Amunì</em>. An invitation to discover Sicily, starting from the choice of the name which embodies the roots of a renewed tradition that can also be found in the dishes, in which the different flavors and ingredients balance each other perfectly. The bar, extending across Piazza Minerva, as well as the outdoor area of the restaurant, are ideal for art lovers who will be able to admire the Doric columns of the Temple of Athena while enjoying a drink.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Historic Hotel </h3>

<p>The two innovations were part of a broader renovation project of the entire hotel by VRetreats which has decided to intervene with the aim of revisiting the structure in contemporary key, while respecting its identity and enhancing the original proportions of the building and the strong Sicilian imprint.</p>

<p>The&nbsp;interventions&nbsp;drew inspiration from the historical architecture of the palace. Inside, the Hotel’s character is truly Sicilian: amidst the limestone used for the Greek temples and Baroque palaces &#8211; still the dominant motif of the building today &#8211; the traditional ‘secret’ courtyards inherited from Arab architecture, the small pensile gardens, the balconies for admiring the beauty of the city and the picturesque tufa stone ‘dammuso’ vaults in the restaurant, every corner speaks of Sicily.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="500" height="334" src="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Palazzo-Artemide2.jpg" alt="Palazzo Artemide " class="wp-image-2999" style="width:850px" srcset="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Palazzo-Artemide2.jpg 500w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Palazzo-Artemide2-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Palazzo-Artemide2-360x240.jpg 360w" sizes="(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px" /></figure>

<p>Specifically, the renovation affected the&nbsp;ground floor&nbsp;with new arrangement of the internal common areas linked to reception, made more spacious and harmonious. Particular attention was paid to the new&nbsp;lighting&nbsp;system, which enhances the pre-existing columns, arches and internal vaults, arranged throughout the entrance area and to the conservation of the entire ocher marble flooring. Furthermore, the rooms were renovated, open on two sides with large balconies and reorganized in their decorative effects with plaster frames and backgrounds, typical of the local tradition, in line with the brand&#8217;s desire to restore the rooms&#8217; their maximum originality.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Palazzo Artemide &#8211; Monumental charme</h3>

<p><strong><a href="https://vretreats.com/en/palazzo-artemide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Palazzo Artemide</a></strong>, a historic hotel in Syracuse, is housed in an ancient late 19th century building adjacent to the Cathedral, the historic center of the city and a masterpiece of Sicilian Baroque.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Palazzo-Artemide4-1024x683.jpg" alt="Palazzo Artemide" class="wp-image-2993" style="width:850px" srcset="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Palazzo-Artemide4-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Palazzo-Artemide4-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Palazzo-Artemide4-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Palazzo-Artemide4-1536x1025.jpg 1536w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Palazzo-Artemide4-360x240.jpg 360w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Palazzo-Artemide4-600x400.jpg 600w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Palazzo-Artemide4.jpg 1799w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p><strong>Palazzo Artemide</strong>, founded in 1880, is set in the center of Ortigia, between the Cathedral and the Arcivescovado [Archbishopric], and faces Piazza Minerva, amid the ancient Doric columns of the Temple, on the main street of the historic city center of Siracusa, Via Roma.</p>

<p>The structure has&nbsp;40 rooms<strong>,</strong>&nbsp;including 3 suites and 6 junior suites, which offer their own identity and diversity in the most refined details. Each is elegantly furnished and equipped with all comforts.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="800" height="800" src="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Palazzo-Artemide5.jpg" alt="Palazzo Artemide Suite" class="wp-image-2997" style="width:727px;height:auto" srcset="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Palazzo-Artemide5.jpg 800w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Palazzo-Artemide5-300x300.jpg 300w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Palazzo-Artemide5-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Palazzo-Artemide5-768x768.jpg 768w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Palazzo-Artemide5-125x125.jpg 125w" sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /></figure>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">These are the (not-so) dormant volcanoes in Italy</h4>

<p>Mount Etna and Stromboli are among the most active volcanoes in Europe. They have only recently erupted again. These sleeping beauties are not that sleepy after all.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Awakened Mount Etna</h2>

<p>The earth is alive: the recent eruption of the Sicilian volcano <em>Etna</em> showed this clearly. A shower of ash fell on the nearby city of Catania, causing the local airport to ban take-offs and landings for several hours. Mount Etna has been going through an especially active period for the last five years. Although it erupts frequently, lava has not reached nearby towns since the 1800s.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="800" height="533" src="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/LEtna-in-eruzione.jpg" alt="Sleeping Beauties Mount Etna" class="wp-image-3160" style="width:850px" srcset="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/LEtna-in-eruzione.jpg 800w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/LEtna-in-eruzione-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/LEtna-in-eruzione-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/LEtna-in-eruzione-360x240.jpg 360w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/LEtna-in-eruzione-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /></figure>

<p>The authorities and population were at least as concerned about the ash emissions from nearby <em>Stromboli</em> on the island of the same name to the north of Sicily. It also came to life at practically the same time as its brother Mount Etna. </p>

<p><strong>Mount Etna</strong> is the highest volcano in Europe with almost 11.000 feet (3.327 m) tall and an average basal diameter of 25 miles (40 km). It is also the most active volcano in the world. The spectacular eruptions and fiery lava flows of <em>Mongibello </em>have always been of great interest to scientists and visitors from all over the planet.&nbsp;A UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its globally important geological features, Mount Etna’s first eruptions date back to about 570,000 years ago. </p>

<p>One thing that&#8217;s still on my bucket list is a horseback riding tour on Mount Etna. In winter, Mount Etna also offers the surprising chance to practice winter sports, a few miles/kilometers from the sea. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Sci-vista-mare-ph.-L.-Patti-1024x768.jpg" alt="Sleeping Beauties Mount Etna" class="wp-image-3162" style="width:850px" srcset="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Sci-vista-mare-ph.-L.-Patti-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Sci-vista-mare-ph.-L.-Patti-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Sci-vista-mare-ph.-L.-Patti-768x576.jpg 768w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Sci-vista-mare-ph.-L.-Patti-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Sci-vista-mare-ph.-L.-Patti-80x60.jpg 80w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Sci-vista-mare-ph.-L.-Patti.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>The various hikes climb along the&nbsp;<a href="https://parcoetna.it/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mount Etna Park</a>&nbsp;nature trails, between woods and verdant orchards, up to the highest altitudes with fascinating views of lunar landscapes, centuries-old lava flows, active caves and steam vents, revealing the charm of this extraordinary natural oasis.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Active Stromboli</h2>

<p>Stromboli &#8211; the whole island is a volcano. <a href="https://www.italia.it/en/sicily/messina/stromboli-island" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stromboli</a> is the active fire giant of a volcanic archipelago: the Aeolian Islands, a treasure trove of obsidian and pumice. It has only recently erupted again. Huge quantities of lava poured out of the crater, making its way down several hundred meters into the sea.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="770" height="500" src="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/20210309135906-enit-sicilia-stromboli-1-1.webp" alt="Volcano Stromboli" class="wp-image-3166" style="width:850px" srcset="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/20210309135906-enit-sicilia-stromboli-1-1.webp 770w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/20210309135906-enit-sicilia-stromboli-1-1-300x195.webp 300w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/20210309135906-enit-sicilia-stromboli-1-1-768x499.webp 768w" sizes="(max-width: 770px) 100vw, 770px" /></figure>

<p>The&nbsp;island of Stromboli<strong>&nbsp;</strong>is the most northern island of the Aeolian archipelago. The UNESCO World Heritage Site lies between Panarea and the Calabrian coast. There is no way to miss the imposing volcano <strong>Mount Stromboli</strong>, one of the most active&nbsp;and perhaps unique volcanoes in the world with its three perpetually erupting craters. </p>

<p>Mount Stromboli is a volcano&nbsp;that commands a respectful awe from all who visit: with two-thirds submerged under the surface of the sea, over time humans have built settlements and communities on its back, for millennia we have continued to tread on its sensitive skin, almost teasing it a little. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="965" height="612" src="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Stromboli.-Massimo.Calcagno_web.jpg" alt="Sleeping Beauties Stromboli eruption" class="wp-image-3168" style="width:850px" srcset="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Stromboli.-Massimo.Calcagno_web.jpg 965w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Stromboli.-Massimo.Calcagno_web-300x190.jpg 300w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Stromboli.-Massimo.Calcagno_web-768x487.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 965px) 100vw, 965px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">@Visit Sicily/Massimo.Calcagno</figcaption></figure>

<p>Of all the Sicilian volcanoes, <em>Iddu</em> (in the Sicilian dialect <em>He</em>) awaits you for an extraordinary night-time experience. The Stromboli guides are highly skilled in navigating the best trails to the summit, depending on the eruptive phases. In any case, the spectacle is assured, rich in emotions that you will remember for the rest of your life. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Sleeping Giant &#8211; Vesuvius</h2>

<p>The myths surrounding ancient <a href="https://pompeiisites.org/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pompeii</a> made Mount Vesuvius near Naples world-famous. Since its last eruption in 1944, when 26 people died despite the evacuation of thousands of people, the mountain has been considered dormant. However, this does not mean that it cannot become active again. There are therefore evacuation plans in place in case of an emergency.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="682" src="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Pompei2_web.jpg" alt="Sleeping Beauties Pompeii" class="wp-image-3158" srcset="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Pompei2_web.jpg 1024w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Pompei2_web-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Pompei2_web-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Pompei2_web-360x240.jpg 360w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Pompei2_web-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Ground rises significantly in places &#8211; Phlegraean Fields</h3>

<p>The danger in the Naples region is particularly acute due to the volcanic area known as the Phlegraean Fields. They are under constant observation by experts. Most recently, at the end of May 2024, they caused an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.4, causing the ground in the region to heave by more than 8 inches (20 cm) in some places. As with <a href="https://www.parconazionaledelvesuvio.it/en/visit-the-park/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mount Vesuvius</a>, there are evacuation plans in place for the fields, just in case.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="685" src="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Panorama_web.jpg" alt="Mount Vesuvius" class="wp-image-3156" srcset="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Panorama_web.jpg 1024w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Panorama_web-300x201.jpg 300w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Panorama_web-768x514.jpg 768w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Panorama_web-360x240.jpg 360w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Panorama_web-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p><strong>Daily life in Italian places is often filled with joyful design and unique masterpieces.&nbsp;Have you ever wondered which are the most colorful destinations in Italy? Here are just a few places that</strong> <strong>literally scream colorful Italy.</strong> </p>

<p><strong>Cinque Terre </strong>has won, by far, the first place with its eight-color palette of Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola und Riomaggiore. The centuries-old coastal villages are known for their colorful houses and terraced vineyards on the steep slopes. Five&nbsp;Ligurian villages&nbsp;overlooking the sea, with the triumph of Mediterranean scrub and colorful houses. For centuries, the villages could only be reached on foot or by sea. Cinque Terre is actually a National Park and a UNESCO World Heritage. A breathtaking view of the sea and the rugged coastline of this protected section of the Ligurian Riviera makes every hike an unforgettable experience.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Burano-1024x683.jpg" alt="Island of Burano - Colorful Italy" class="wp-image-2007" srcset="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Burano-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Burano-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Burano-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Burano-360x240.jpg 360w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Burano-600x400.jpg 600w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Burano.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Equally vivid are the colors that fascinate visitors on the lagoon island of <strong>Burano</strong>. It is one of the most densely populated islands in the Venice lagoon. And, it might be the most colorful island in the world. Burano is an island where many fishermen used to live. According to a local legend, they painted their houses in different colors so that they could recognize them from a distance while fishing. This way they could always return home safely even in heavy fog. No cars are allowed on the island and it can only be reached by <em>Vaporetto</em> (Water taxi). &nbsp;</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Procida-1024x683.jpg" alt="Procida / Italian Capital of Culture 2022" class="wp-image-2009" srcset="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Procida-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Procida-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Procida-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Procida-360x240.jpg 360w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Procida-600x400.jpg 600w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Procida.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p><strong>Procida</strong> is the new Italian Capital of Culture 2022. With its colorful houses and idyllic beaches, it has often served as a film set. Located in the Gulf of Naples, it can be reached from Naples in less than an hour&#8217;s boat ride and delights its guests with picturesque villages, dreamy bathing bays and vegetation rich in cacti, fig and citrus trees due to its volcanic origin. With the title of Capital of Culture, the small island will attract wider attention. At the same time, in its role, it wants to be a symbol of slow tourism, with a focus on sustainability and responsible treatment of residents and the environment, away from mass tourism. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Staying at <strong>Hotel de Russie</strong>, close to the Spanish Steps, you’ll discover its own secret &#8211; a hidden garden at its heart. Originally designed by architect Giuseppe Valadier, the garden’s fragrant orange trees and tiered terraces have been revamped by former Valentino interiors designer Tommaso Ziffer. </p>

<p>Walk down the Spanish Steps and venture out on the various shopping streets, among them, straight ahead, famous Via Condotti with abundant designer shops. </p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>Experience the City of Sin&#8217;s dark side. </p>

<p>When staying at <strong>Hotel de la Ville</strong> in Rome, you can embark on a two-hour guided tour through the dark streets of Rome’s heretics, traitors and ghosts. As you cross Sant’Angelo bridge you’ll learn about Mastro Titta, official executioner for the Papal States. Travel back to the taverns where Caravaggio brawled in the streets and and relive the political plots of the quite possibly murderous Cesare Borgia and his sister, Lucrezia Borgia, a noblewoman with a notorious reputation.</p>

<p>The extravagant interiors of Hotel de la Ville &#8211; by designer Tommaso Ziffer and Olga Polizzi &#8211; were inspired by the Grand Tour era. Stay at the sumptuous 18th-century palazzo and you’ll have access to the whole of Rome, laid out before you, from the top of the Spanish Steps. </p>

<p>Puglia is always connected to a culinary experience. Nothing different here, at <strong>Masseria Torre Maizza</strong>.</p>

<p>Masseria Torre Maizza has curated a journey through Puglia on a plate. At the Grandmother’s Table, you will enjoy a Sunday lunch with Apulian dishes like grandma used to make. A traditional Sunday lunch is a feast and a chance to be immersed in local culinary traditions. Hosted by local mothers and grandmothers, the meal is a chance to spend the day together. A communal table will be set among monumental olive trees and seasonal flowers and you will leave as part of the family.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="850" height="566" src="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/Masseria_Torre_Maizza__Torre_Suite_web.jpg" alt="Masseria Torre Maizza, Puglia" class="wp-image-2299" srcset="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/Masseria_Torre_Maizza__Torre_Suite_web.jpg 850w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/Masseria_Torre_Maizza__Torre_Suite_web-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/Masseria_Torre_Maizza__Torre_Suite_web-768x511.jpg 768w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/Masseria_Torre_Maizza__Torre_Suite_web-360x240.jpg 360w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/Masseria_Torre_Maizza__Torre_Suite_web-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px" /></figure>

<p>Food is an important part of the rhythm of life at Masseria Torre Maizza, a five-star conversion of a 16th- century farmhouse. At the main restaurant, Il Carosello, local chef Nicola Lenoci infuses the menu with Puglian flavors while precious memories are made at the private dining table in our walled garden. Once your appetite for gastronomy has been fully satisfied, you can enjoy the hotel’s 9-hole golf course, private beach club and the Irene Forte Spa, housed in an old olive mill.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="850" height="566" src="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/Masseria_Torre_Maizza2_web.jpg" alt="Rocco Forte Hotel Masseria Torre Maizza" class="wp-image-2301" srcset="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/Masseria_Torre_Maizza2_web.jpg 850w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/Masseria_Torre_Maizza2_web-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/Masseria_Torre_Maizza2_web-768x511.jpg 768w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/Masseria_Torre_Maizza2_web-360x240.jpg 360w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/Masseria_Torre_Maizza2_web-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px" /></figure>

<p>I have lived in Puglia a long time ago, and visited several times since. The hospitality and warmth of Apulian people has stayed in my heart. The food, even though sometimes very simple, is really fantastic, fresh and tasty. It&#8217;s a place that you should not leave out of your &#8220;bucket list&#8221;. </p>

<p>At <strong>Verdura Resort</strong> in Sicily, you can golf your heart out. </p>

<p>Tee yourself up for the ultimate golfing afternoon and you’ll be welcomed with a personalized gift bag on arrival, filled with golf equipment including a dozen professional standard golf balls and a Verdura golf shirt. </p>

<p>Set on 230 hectares and with close to two kilometers of private Mediterranean coastline, near Agrigent, you have the choice of two seaside championship golf courses designed by Kyle Phillips at Verdura. Once set up with the right equipment, it’s time to improve your swing. Get to grips with the right technique at a 30-minute lesson with our PGA coach on the driving range. Relax after your training session with a three-course lunch in the clubhouse.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="850" height="567" src="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/FB-JPG_web.jpg" alt="Verdura Resort lunch" class="wp-image-2307" srcset="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/FB-JPG_web.jpg 850w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/FB-JPG_web-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/FB-JPG_web-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/FB-JPG_web-360x240.jpg 360w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/FB-JPG_web-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px" /></figure>

<p>Heading for a hole-in-one, you’ll finish your golfing experience by testing your skills on our championship 18-hole golf course, playing four holes with our pro. </p>

<p>Because of the scarcity of water resources in Sicily, and the quantities required to maintain the resort’s golf courses, a water-recycling system has been installed. A further measure introduced to save water has been the conversion of the lawn around the golf course into decorative rock gardens.</p>

<p>Al-fresco living is at the heart of the resort’s philosophy with three pools, endless parkland, flower and herb gardens, two restaurants and a beach-front lido. The cuisine is fresh and seasonal.</p>

<p>Spa therapies and well-being treatments have been designed to harness the power of nature and include local herbs, wildflowers, extracts, oils and fragrances harvested from the Sicilian hills and valleys. Indulge the senses and experience slow travel at its most luxurious.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A Natural Haven</h2>

<p>The location of the ADLER Spa Resort SICILIA was specifically selected by the owners for its exceptional natural beauty. The vicinity to the Mediterranean Sea and setting alongside one of Sicily’s most precious nature reserves, the Torre Salsa. Situated in Siculiana (Agrigento) on the southwest coast of Sicily, the resort stands less than a quarter of a mile from the beach and just 260 feet above sea level on a panoramic plateau.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="850" height="478" src="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/vista-0172-hi_web.jpg" alt="ADLER Spa Resort Sicilia" class="wp-image-2222" srcset="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/vista-0172-hi_web.jpg 850w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/vista-0172-hi_web-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/vista-0172-hi_web-768x432.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px" /></figure>

<p>Beneath the beautifully landscaped gardens the terrain slopes down toward the coastline with sand dunes, wild grasses and scented heathers leading the way. The property enjoys direct and private access to a sheltered sandy beach, offset by a backdrop of majestic Mediterranean umbrella pines. <p>Seasonal and regional cuisine leads the way. The restaurant and osteria menus highlight the vibrant flavors of the abundant regional harvest. Freshly caught fish are transformed into elegant dishes with simple yet delicious ingredients grown in the gardens of the resort or supplied by local farmers. Organic meats are reared in the countryside nearby and delicious desserts feature the perfumes and flavors of citrus, wild raspberries and sun ripened fruits.</p>

<p>The colorful cuisine of Southern Sicily is enhanced further with excellent wines made with grapes grown on the fertile slopes of Monte Etna. The restaurants’ extensive wine list also boasts biodynamic wines from the owners’ own biodynamic estate in rural Tuscany. The alfresco terrace at the Osteria offers outstanding views set beneath the dappled shade of a large pergola. The main sea view restaurant provides an elegant backdrop for a fine dining experience with a sensational sunset vista of the Mediterranean.</p>

<p>What is a “BORGO”? The literal translation of Borgo in English would be “Village”. But the term Village does not fully explain what a “Borgo” is. A “Borgo” is a fascinating small Italian town, generally fortified and dating back to the period from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance.</p>

<p>The association of the &#8220;Most Beautiful Villages in Italy&#8221; (I Borghi più belli d&#8217;Italia) has gained twelve new members. A total of 325 villages, each with unique characteristics, now belong to the network, which is committed not only to promoting tourism but also to preserving and restoring the historic fabric of the villages.</p>

<p>In addition to the cultural and historical importance of the places, sustainable aspects of the tourist infrastructure, an intact old town without car traffic, the preservation of the architectural fabric, living traditions as well as the promotion of the quality of life play a significant role in the award as one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>12 new villages in the &#8220;Borghi più belli d&#8217;Italia&#8221; association</strong></h3>

<p>As one of the newly awarded villages, <strong>Alberobello</strong> is probably one of the better-known destinations on the tourist map. Located in the Itria Valley in Puglia, the &#8220;City of the Trulli&#8221; was recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1996 for its characteristic architecture.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img decoding="async" src="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Alberobello.jpg" alt="Alberobello" class="wp-image-1652" width="850" srcset="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Alberobello.jpg 575w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Alberobello-300x163.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 575px) 100vw, 575px" /></figure></div>

<p>On the eastern shore of Lake Como in the province of Lecco lies <strong>Bellano</strong>, a small fishing village with narrow streets and colorful houses. Not far away is the impressive &#8220;Orrido di Bellano&#8221;, a deep natural gorge that can be crossed along paths carved into the rock.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Bellano-1024x598.jpg" alt="Bellano" class="wp-image-1654" width="850" height="433"/></figure></div>

<p>Sicily is home to two of the newly awarded villages: in the province of Siracusa, in the heart of the Monti Iblei, lies <strong>Buccheri</strong>, rich in evidence of a long history marked by the ancient Greeks, Romans Byzantines, Arabs and Normans. In the province of Enna, on the other hand, is the small village of <strong>Calascibetta</strong>, which also scores with its archaeological heritage, such as the necropolis of Realmese from the Iron Age.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="850" height="567" src="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Calascibetta_Flickr_DGavrile_web-copy.jpg" alt="Calascibetta" class="wp-image-1676" srcset="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Calascibetta_Flickr_DGavrile_web-copy.jpg 850w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Calascibetta_Flickr_DGavrile_web-copy-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Calascibetta_Flickr_DGavrile_web-copy-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Calascibetta_Flickr_DGavrile_web-copy-360x240.jpg 360w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Calascibetta_Flickr_DGavrile_web-copy-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px" /></figure></div>

<p><strong>Campiglia Marittima</strong>, in the province of Livorno in Tuscany, is also one of the most beautiful villages in Italy: it is located on a hill in the Val di Cornia with a wide view of the Tyrrhenian Sea and the surrounding countryside.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="433" height="650" src="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Campiglia_marittima_CC_Sailko_web.jpg" alt="Campiglia Marittima" class="wp-image-1678" srcset="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Campiglia_marittima_CC_Sailko_web.jpg 433w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Campiglia_marittima_CC_Sailko_web-200x300.jpg 200w" sizes="(max-width: 433px) 100vw, 433px" /></figure></div>

<p>The Lazio region is represented by <strong>Castelnuovo di Porto</strong> in the province of Rome, where the important 13th century Castello della Rocca is located. The ancient village is located on a tuff spur and is of Etruscan origin.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="850" height="638" src="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Castelnuovo_di_Porto_CC_Nubifer_web.jpg" alt="Castelnuovo di Porto" class="wp-image-1680" srcset="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Castelnuovo_di_Porto_CC_Nubifer_web.jpg 850w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Castelnuovo_di_Porto_CC_Nubifer_web-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Castelnuovo_di_Porto_CC_Nubifer_web-768x576.jpg 768w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Castelnuovo_di_Porto_CC_Nubifer_web-80x60.jpg 80w" sizes="(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px" /></figure></div>

<p><strong>Crecchio</strong>, in the province of Chieti in Abruzzo, is surrounded by vineyards and olive groves on a small hill near the Arielli River and is dominated by the Ducal Castle, which today houses the &#8220;Byzantine and Early Medieval Museum of Abruzzo&#8221;.</p>

<p>Not just a village, but a small island: <strong>La Maddalena</strong>, capital of one of the most popular islands of Sardinia in the archipelago of the same name, captivates with its historical center and its natural beauty and is now also one of the &#8220;Borghi più belli d&#8217;Italia&#8221;.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="850" height="564" src="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/La-Maddalena_Matteo-Gabrieli_web-1.jpg" alt="La Maddalena" class="wp-image-1684" srcset="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/La-Maddalena_Matteo-Gabrieli_web-1.jpg 850w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/La-Maddalena_Matteo-Gabrieli_web-1-300x199.jpg 300w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/La-Maddalena_Matteo-Gabrieli_web-1-768x510.jpg 768w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/La-Maddalena_Matteo-Gabrieli_web-1-360x240.jpg 360w" sizes="(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px" /></figure></div>

<p>Further north, the province of Trento can also boast 2 new additions: <strong>Luserna</strong> is a true natural balcony and one of the most historic and traditional municipalities of Trentino, where Cimbric, an ancient German language, is still spoken. <strong>Pieve Tesino</strong> is located on the southern slopes of Monte Silana and extends over the Tesino basin. The village is also known as the birthplace of the Italian statesman Alcide De Gasperi.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="850" height="557" src="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Luserna_TrentinoSviluppo_ArturoCruel_web.jpg" alt="Luserna" class="wp-image-1686" srcset="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Luserna_TrentinoSviluppo_ArturoCruel_web.jpg 850w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Luserna_TrentinoSviluppo_ArturoCruel_web-300x197.jpg 300w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Luserna_TrentinoSviluppo_ArturoCruel_web-768x503.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px" /></figure></div>

<p><strong>Nocera Umbra</strong>, in the province of Perugia, was founded by the Umbrians and later conquered by the Romans, who made it an important stop on the Via Flaminia. Its origins as a defensive fortress are still witnessed by the immense castle walls.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img decoding="async" src="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Nocera-Umbra-1024x569.jpg" alt="Nocera Umbra" class="wp-image-1667" width="850" srcset="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Nocera-Umbra-1024x569.jpg 1024w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Nocera-Umbra-300x167.jpg 300w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Nocera-Umbra-768x427.jpg 768w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Nocera-Umbra.jpg 1080w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>In the Marche, <strong>Petritoli </strong>was chosen as the new borgo in the province of Fermo. Situated on a hill, it overlooks the green and fertile Aso Valley and offers a breathtaking panorama from the Sibillini Mountains to the Adriatic coast.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="850" height="309" src="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Monti-Sibillini_Marche-Tourism_web2.jpg" alt="Sibillini Mountains" class="wp-image-1688" srcset="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Monti-Sibillini_Marche-Tourism_web2.jpg 850w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Monti-Sibillini_Marche-Tourism_web2-300x109.jpg 300w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Monti-Sibillini_Marche-Tourism_web2-768x279.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px" /></figure></div>

<p>Wild beaches and pristine landscapes surrounded by the scents of Mediterranean vegetation, hidden coasts caressed by a turquoise sea that is just as good as any tropical paradise: from Liguria to Sardinia, from Veneto to Campania, Italy enshrines breathtaking beaches where you can enjoy the sea and feast your eyes with magnificent views. Here are Italy’s most scenic beaches.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Scala dei Turchi, Sicily</h3>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img decoding="async" src="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Scala-dei-Turchi.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1180" width="650" srcset="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Scala-dei-Turchi.jpg 597w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Scala-dei-Turchi-300x195.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 597px) 100vw, 597px" /></figure></div>

<p>Located between Realmonte and Porto Empedocle, in the Agrigento area, <em><a href="http://www.visitsicily.info/en/scala-dei-turchi/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Scala dei Turchi</a></em> is one of a kind in Italy: it is not a beach but a dazzling white cliff, slowly carved by the wind and the sea. According to legend, it was once a shelter for Turkish ships plundering along the Sicilian coast from here. To get to the beach you have to pass along a natural staircase carved into the limestone. All around are sheltered coves.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Cala Luna, Sardinia</strong></h3>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img decoding="async" src="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Cala-Luna.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1182" width="650" srcset="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Cala-Luna.jpg 597w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Cala-Luna-300x195.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 597px) 100vw, 597px" /></figure></div>

<p>Cala Luna is on the eastern coast of Sardinia, in the Gulf of Orosei. It is one of the most peculiar beaches on the island for its wilderness: <a href="https://www.sardegnaturismo.it/en/explore/cala-luna" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Cala Lun</em>a</a>&nbsp;is framed by rocky sides and arduous peaks, and dotted with caves, for its crystal clear sea, highly valued for underwater fishing and diving. The golden sandy beach and shallow waters make it suitable for children. You can reach this gem only by sea and by tourist boats, or by following an strenuous path (for skilled hikers); however, you will find a bar and restaurant there.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>La Fontelina, Campania</strong></h3>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img decoding="async" src="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/La-Fontelina-Faraglioni.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1184" width="650" srcset="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/La-Fontelina-Faraglioni.jpg 597w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/La-Fontelina-Faraglioni-300x195.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 597px) 100vw, 597px" /></figure></div>

<p>One of the most scenic and exclusive beaches in the world,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fontelina-capri.com/en/index" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>La Fontelina</em></a>&nbsp;is nestled between the rocks and the sea, where you can take a huge dive in front of the famous&nbsp;<em><strong>Faraglion</strong>i</em>. An enchanting place that seems to be created as a film set, the beach was already a place of idleness in Roman times. Wearing beach shoes is a must, but the satisfaction of your senses is assured. Fontelina has been a renowned beach club for years &#8211; with sun-beds and beach umbrellas, a bar and a restaurant; you can get there following the little road that begins from the Belvedere di Tragara.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>San Fruttuoso Bay, Liguria</strong></h3>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img decoding="async" src="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/San-Fruttuoso-Bay.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1186" width="650" srcset="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/San-Fruttuoso-Bay.jpg 597w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/San-Fruttuoso-Bay-300x195.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 597px) 100vw, 597px" /></figure></div>

<p>It is a small bay nestled between the Ligurian Mountains, between Camogli and Portofino, in the&nbsp;<strong>Regional Natural Park of Portofino,</strong>&nbsp;with a beautiful turquoise sea &#8211; a marine protected area: the small&nbsp;beach of <em>San Fruttuoso</em>&nbsp;is dominated by a 12th century Abbey that bears its name; in its waters, about 17 meters deep, it houses the submerged statue of&nbsp;<strong>Christ of the Abyss</strong>. The beach is made of pebbles, with a beach resort and rest stops, and can be reached by boat from the nearby places (also from Genoa) or on foot in about two hours, following the paths in the park.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Collelungo Beach, Tuscany</strong></h3>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img decoding="async" src="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Collelungo-Beach.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1188" width="650" srcset="https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Collelungo-Beach.jpg 597w, https://www.discover-italy-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Collelungo-Beach-300x195.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 597px) 100vw, 597px" /></figure></div>

<p>This is a wild paradise, nestled between rocky cliffs and golden sandy dunes covered with lillies and pine forests. It is overlooked by the Tower of Collelungo, near Marina di Alberese, in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.visittuscany.com/en/attractions/the-natural-park-of-maremma/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Maremma Nature Park.</a> <em>Collelungo Beach</em> is quiet and rarely visited. You could also spot some foxes or herds of cows lying on the beach. Surrounded by sand dunes and the typical Maremma vegetation; the sea is calm and clear. This is an ideal place for lovers of nature and tranquillity. It includes two beaches, divided in two by a cliff: <em>Baia delle Zagare</em> and <em>Baia dei Faraglioni</em>, both of white pebbles. The beaches can be reached by sea or through paths that branch off the main road.</p>
