A(rt) Message in a (Chianti Classico) Bottle

“Casa in bottiglia” by French artist Clet Abraham arrived at Vallepicciola by means of the “A(rt) message in a (Chianti Classico) bottle” project, promoted by the Consorzio del Chianti Classico, and celebrates not just wine, but also Chianti Classico, which has long inspired poets and artists. The bottle-sculpture made of polystyrene and standing 4 meters tall is a street art reinterpretation of the iconic bottle that has always defined Chianti Classico, featuring a whimsical house with a door, window, and a smoke cloud from the chimney, representing a unique visit for art lovers.

Hotel Le Fontanelle*****

It was siblings Bruno and Giuseppina Bolfo who discovered the wine-growing potential of the Val di Picciola Valley when they bought an abandoned 17th-century monastery in 1999 and renovated it into what is now the five-star Hotel Le Fontanelle.

It took seven years to carefully and respectfully renovate the structure, maintaining the energy in its massive stone exterior, building with wood from the region and delicately adding refined terracotta pavements aligned with the classic style of Chianti.

Thus in 2006 Hotel Le Fontanelle became a unique place, which, thanks to a refined and gentle welcome, offers a more authentic and immersive experience of Chianti. The 5-star accommodation offers a discreet elegance deep in the heart of Chianti. The luxury rooms and suites are furnished with terracotta floors and oak-beamed ceilings, some offer a private lounge or garden area.

The beautiful location offers a panoramic swimming pool, a heated indoor swimming pool, sauna, Turkish bath, Jacuzzi and relaxing area. Mountain bikes are free to use for guests.

Surrounding the property there was a piece of land of 3 hectares that became the starting point of the winemaking business. Five years later, the brothers bought and restored another ruin adjacent to the hotel, reaching 6 hectares of vineyards that would allow Vallepicciola to start a small wine production intended for the consumption and sale at the hotel only.

The iconic landmark is struggling amid the chaos of mounting crowds and the resulting wear and tear. Now, the city of Rome wants to take action.

Starting in February, nonresidents of Rome will be required to pay a fee for an up-close viewing and coin tossing at the Trevi fountain in an effort to manage crowds and congestion.

Toss that coin and make a wish – will no longer be free. In an effort to protect one of the city’s most beloved monuments and to ease the relentless crush of visitors, Rome is introducing a paid ticket system aimed at managing crowds and preserving the site’s integrity. Starting February 1, 2026, nonresidents of Rome will be required to pay 2 Euro (approximately US$2.35) to descend the steps leading directly to the fountain.

It’s no secret that visiting the Trevi Fountain in recent years has become difficult as everyone is fighting to get that great picture or selfie. The congestion has also made the area a hot spot for pickpockets. City officials say the new fee is intended to create a calmer, more dignified experience, restoring a sense of wonder to a site increasingly overwhelmed by its own popularity. However, the view of the fountain will not be obstructed in any way.

Paid access will be in effect daily from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. There will be 10 stations within the piazza where you can purchase your ticket, which will also be for sale online at fontanaditreve.roma.it, at tourist info points, ticket offices within the museum system, and authorized sales outlets. All tickets will be open ended, meaning you won’t have to worry about a reservation for a timed entrance. Access will remain free at night.

A pearl of the Gulf of Orosei, on the coast of central-eastern Sardinia: a small hidden bay with white and pink pebbles that is well worth a walk through the wild nature or a boat trip.

Take a dip in a sea that looks like it was painted. The beach is also known as pùligi de nie (snow fleas) because of its round, white and pink pebbles mixed with sand. Cala Mariolu, in the Baunei area, owes its name to the monk seal that stole the catch from the fishermen of Ponza, hence mariolo (thief).

Its panorama is so impressive due to its infinite shades of blue, emerald green and mid-blue, and the snowflake-like pebbles. The 1.650-feet (500 meter)-high cliff that surrounds it drops steeply both to the north and to the south. For this reason, Cala Mariolu can only be reached by land via a difficult path (for experts) through dense Mediterranean forest.

Watch out: There is no more sun on this stretch of beach from around 4 pm. It therefore makes sense to arrive a little earlier in the day. In addition to being one of the most beautiful beaches in Italy, the bay of Cala Mariolu in Sardinia is even considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe! It is therefore definitely worth a visit.

During a vacation in Molise, it is well worth taking the time to visit Campitello Matese, a ski resort with 40 kilometers / 25 miles of slopes, rich in lakes, forests, caves and grottos, and meadows, as well as unique paths ideal for walking, horse riding, mountain biking or quad biking, and even paragliding.

Known as the Land of Towers from the Norman and Angevin periods, but also as the City of Oil, thanks to the excellent quality of the oil produced in its countryside, it boasts a historical center and urban structure that have remained unchanged over the centuries.

Try searching for the tratturi, ancient beaten-grass sheep tracks along which shepherds, from pre-Roman times until a couple of centuries ago, would move their flocks each season. This well-known phenomenon of the transhumance of livestock has marked the rural South by following strict routes and ensuring an economic livelihood even in the most isolated areas.

Or you can keep an eye out for the Sanctuary of Castelpetroso in the province of Isernia. Looking like a medieval castle, it stands in the middle of the woods and has a history of alleged apparitions of the Virgin Mary, dating back to 1888, when the Virgin is said to have appeared with the bleeding Jesus in her arms as an offering to humanity.

Finally, it is also worth visiting Sant’Angelo Limosano, a village sat on a hill 900 meters / one mile above sea level that dominates the Biferno valley, offering panoramic views that even reach as far as the Tremiti Islands, weather permitting.

The Hotel Roma in Ortigia (Syracuse) changed its name and received a new look. The hotel, designed by VRetreats, is now Palazzo Artemide.

A non-random choice, which refers to the name of the Greek goddess protector of the city of Syracuse to whom the same Temple, the Artemision, is also dedicated. The remains of which can still be admired today along Via Minerva, at the highest point of the Island of Ortigia is a short walk from the hotel.

Added to this was also the new naming of the restaurant and bar inside: Amunì. An invitation to discover Sicily, starting from the choice of the name which embodies the roots of a renewed tradition that can also be found in the dishes, in which the different flavors and ingredients balance each other perfectly. The bar, extending across Piazza Minerva, as well as the outdoor area of the restaurant, are ideal for art lovers who will be able to admire the Doric columns of the Temple of Athena while enjoying a drink.

Historic Hotel

The two innovations were part of a broader renovation project of the entire hotel by VRetreats which has decided to intervene with the aim of revisiting the structure in contemporary key, while respecting its identity and enhancing the original proportions of the building and the strong Sicilian imprint.

The interventions drew inspiration from the historical architecture of the palace. Inside, the Hotel’s character is truly Sicilian: amidst the limestone used for the Greek temples and Baroque palaces – still the dominant motif of the building today – the traditional ‘secret’ courtyards inherited from Arab architecture, the small pensile gardens, the balconies for admiring the beauty of the city and the picturesque tufa stone ‘dammuso’ vaults in the restaurant, every corner speaks of Sicily.

Specifically, the renovation affected the ground floor with new arrangement of the internal common areas linked to reception, made more spacious and harmonious. Particular attention was paid to the new lighting system, which enhances the pre-existing columns, arches and internal vaults, arranged throughout the entrance area and to the conservation of the entire ocher marble flooring. Furthermore, the rooms were renovated, open on two sides with large balconies and reorganized in their decorative effects with plaster frames and backgrounds, typical of the local tradition, in line with the brand’s desire to restore the rooms’ their maximum originality.

Palazzo Artemide – Monumental charme

Palazzo Artemide, a historic hotel in Syracuse, is housed in an ancient late 19th century building adjacent to the Cathedral, the historic center of the city and a masterpiece of Sicilian Baroque.

Palazzo Artemide, founded in 1880, is set in the center of Ortigia, between the Cathedral and the Arcivescovado [Archbishopric], and faces Piazza Minerva, amid the ancient Doric columns of the Temple, on the main street of the historic city center of Siracusa, Via Roma.

Alta Badia – for excellent cuisine

Situated at the north-east corner of the Sella Ronda circuit in South Tyrol, Alta Badia combines stunning nature, centuries old culture and mouth-watering cuisine. Madonna di Campiglio – for top events

Located on the western fringes of the scenic Dolomites, Madonna di Campiglio is an upmarket ski resort with100 miles of interconnected runs across three ski areas. Val Gardena – for spectacular skiing & extensive scenery

Situated at the north-west corner of the Sella Ronda circuit, Val Gardena is made up of three towns – Ortisei, Santa Cristina and Selva. Ortisei is Val Gardena’s main town and arguably the prettiest of the three with a cobblestone-lined pedestrian area. A food and wine tour in the historic villages of Trentino

In its valleys the Trentino region encompasses a host of small romantic villages – recognized by the association of “Borghi più Belli d’Italia” (“the most beautiful villages of Italy”) – with stone houses, courtyards and old barns, each offering home-style recipes worth tasting, the ideal locations for a romantic trip to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Your couple’s itinerary can start from Canale di Tenno, a medieval village on a hill overlooking the turquoise waters of Lake Tenno. A little further on, you’ll find Rango, an amazing example of rural alpine architecture. After a walk hand-in-hand among its barns and cobbled streets, make sure you try the famous Bleggio walnut pie. From here, you can set off again towards San Lorenzo in Banale, set between the Brenta Dolomites and Lake Garda. Before leaving try tosela di Primiero, a local cheese best sampled with polenta and luganega from Trentino. Your romantic tour through the historic villages of Trentino can end in Vigo di Fassa, a sunny village from which you can admire the Marmolada, the queen of the Dolomites, as she turns pink at sunset. Three days immersed in the beauty of Maremma

Enjoy thermal springs, historic villages and idyllic landscapes. Your ideal starting point could be Saturnia. The town features an archaeological park hosting ruins from the Etruscan and Roman ages, striking natural waterfalls of thermal water – the Cascate del Mulino – as well as some of the most famous thermal baths in the world, dating as far back as ancient times. Having left Saturnia, head for Sovana, in the heart of the Tuff area. Sovana is a noteworthy Etruscan center, medieval and Renaissance village, and episcopal center. It will amaze you with its houses carved out of tuff and its exquisite medieval palaces. Just beyond it, you’ll come across Sorano. The ancient city was founded in the most flourishing Etruscan period. Browse workshops of the craftsmen and women who make and sell picturesque ceramic artefacts, visit the Renaissance fortress and the archaeological park of the City of Tuff, with its necropolis carved into the rocks.

Your next stop will be Pitigliano, a center built thousands of years ago, located on a cliff, also carved out of tuff. Plan your visit at sunset, and treat your eyes to a host of breathtaking, romantic views. Pitigliano preserves traces of prehistoric settlements, Etruscan tombs and Roman ruins. You can also stroll through the old alleys of the Jewish ghetto, which earned it the title of “Little Jerusalem”. Appreciate the excellent white wines produced locally, especially the Bianco di Pitigliano. To round off your romantic trip, we recommend Capalbio. This historic village is surrounded by walls and full of medieval architecture, skimmed by the rolling hills of the Maremma scrub and unspoilt beaches. Last but not least, before leaving, take a stroll in the beautiful nature reserve surrounding the shores of Lake Burano.

Valentine’s Day in Verona, the city of love

A Valentine’s Day in Italy wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the City of Love. If for Valentine’s Day you want to spend a weekend with your partner in the ultimate romantic location, there is only one obvious choice: Verona, the city where Shakespeare set the most famous romance of all times: that of Romeo and Juliet. The myth of the two lovers lives again in the medieval Juliet’s House, but also in the ancient squares of the city, its lanes, courtyards, fascinating views and along the meanders of river Adige. To mark Valentine’s Day, the city of Verona is organizing the event Verona in Love. From February 9 to 14, 2025, the most atmospheric corners of the city, from Piazza Bra to Juliet’s House, will be decorated and illuminated in red; there will also be markets in the city with local handicrafts (in the classic heart shape), tastings, guided walks for couples in search of the secrets and legends of Romeo and Juliet, themed evenings and many other romantic surprises. New this year is a music competition for young Italian cantautori, where the best love song will be awarded the Premio Arte d’Amore. Sports enthusiasts, on the other hand, can prove their fitness in the footsteps of Romeo and Juliet in the half marathon on February 15 through the city of love.
